My student,
Bob, is 80 years old. He never learned how to read. Although he
recognizes some words, reading for comprehension and enjoyment
is beyond his ability. We've worked together for many months now,
and Bob's self-esteem has grown remarkably. When we first met,
he was embarrassed about his reading difficulties and ashamed
to meet in public places. Now, he is proud of his attempt to overcome
his handicap at this stage of life. He recently remarked that
when he tells people about his efforts to learn to read, they
are impressed. "They tell me, 'Isn't that wonderful!'"
says Bob. "I guess it is something."

As I attempt
to teach Bob the rudiments of reading, the things most of us learned
in first grade - phonics, vowels, sight words - I realize how
much he teaches me about persistence, perserverance and attitude.
We all have things we'd like to learn. It really never is too
late.
