A Tribute to Catherine Brannigan (1931-2009)

Catherine Brannigan joined the Literacy Council in 1994 and became a valuable member of our administrative staff.  Catherine came to us from Cornwall , New York where she spent several years as Volunteer Coordinator for Cornwall Hospital .

Catherine was a natural at recruiting and working with volunteers, she had insight and understanding of the individual needs of volunteers.   During her time at the Council, Catherine improved our Tutor Training Workshop to make it more relevant to our particular program and to better prepare our volunteer tutors.

We will remember Catherine for her positive attitude and her respect for our volunteers and understanding of and dedication to our adult learners.  Catherine would go to great lengths to make learners feel confident so that they could fulfill their learning goals, and to make the tutoring sessions as convenient as possible for adults whose learning to read is often made difficult because of child care and employment responsibilities, as well as lack of transportation.  Catherine made sure that she found a convenient location and time for both tutors and their learners.

Catherine’s compassion and kindness extended beyond her work at the Literacy Council and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
