Mirko with Cape Cod Literacy Council Tutor Al Williams busy at work at the Hyannis Public Library

All About Tutoring

"About three years ago, Mirko and his family fled war-torn Bosnia and settled on Cape Cod. Shortly thereafter, Mirko started working in a Cape Cod restaurant as a dishwasher. He and I first connected in May 2000 as learner/tutor. Since then, we have been meeting weekly at the Hyannis Public Library. Mirko told me that he wanted to become a cook at the restaurant where he washed dishes. So, I asked him to bring the restaurant's menu and the waitstaff's handwritten orders to our meetings. We worked with these until he became familiar with the waitstaff's abbreviations. After Labor Day, his boss began training him as a cook and even increased his salary. Mirko has progressed so well that his boss (the owner of the restaurant) left Mirko in charge of cooking and scheduling while he is in Florida. He left in February and won't return until April.

I am very proud of Mirko's accomplishments both in English and at his place of employment"
